Australian Merino wool is trusted by designers and consumers across the world, with environmental health front of mind by the woolgrowers who produce it. Australian woolgrowers aim to leave the environment in a better way than how they found it, securing the health of the land for generations to come.
Australian woolgrowers work to preserve, protect and improve the natural resources of their farms; the waterways, valleys and hills, and native plants and animals. The Woolmark Company provides valuable resources and workshops to run projects dedicated to environmental health, including improving soil quality and enhancing biodiversity.
Improving Environmental Health
We invest in research into more effective ways to manage water and nutrient resources on wool-growing properties. Water allocations are in place to prevent over usage and improve land management.
Our research into the potential impacts of grazing on biodiversity and extension of sustainable land management practices has shown sheep can assist in the sustainable management of Australian landscapes and mixed farming operations.
By 2022, 50% of Australian woolgrowers will be taking up climate variability practices. The Woolmark Company’s parent provides practical tools and tactics to manage climate risk, while maintaining productivity.
A 5-year project has begun this year to capture and report on-farm stewardship by woolgrowers assessing impacts on soil health, biodiversity, and threatened native species.
We invest in land management research, development and extension to provide a sound base for the wool industry's ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship.
Woolgrowers install pest management cluster fences that protect livestock from harmful threats, such as wild dogs, allowing sheep to graze on nurtured pastures.
Woolgrowers strive to regenerate barren land. By introducing shrubs such as saltbush and other forages, woolgrowers are able to better utilize existing soil and provide high-quality feed for animals.
These projects allow us to scientifically chart the ongoing benefits, resulting in more tree planted and the study of flora and fauna to documents gains in biodiversity.
